Best cameras for beginners in 2026
Updated 2026-10-30 · 2 min read · prices update with every price check
Your first proper camera should be small enough that you take it with you, simple enough that you enjoy it, and part of a system with lenses you can afford later. That rules out most of what's in camera shop windows. Here is what we would recommend to a friend.
Our picks for a first camera
- Best overall: Nikon Z50 II. It has a viewfinder, two control dials and a big grip. It feels like a "real" camera and is still light.
- Cheapest good one: Canon EOS R50 V. Small, very easy, and great for video. No viewfinder, so you frame on the flip-out screen.
- Best for colour straight out of camera: Fujifilm X-M5. Fujifilm's film simulations make photos look finished without editing. Also no viewfinder.
- Best for video first: Sony ZV-E10 II. Built for creators, with Sony's huge range of E-mount lenses.

What actually matters for a beginner
- Lenses you can afford. The body is a one-off; lenses are where the money goes. Canon RF, Sony E and Nikon Z all have cheap, good lenses. Our guide to the first lens upgrade shows what to buy after the kit lens.
- A flip-out screen. Useful for low angles, high angles and filming yourself. All four picks have one.
- Sensor size. APS-C is the sweet spot for a first camera. Sensor sizes explained shows why.
- Megapixels. Anything over 20 MP is plenty. Don't pay more for resolution you won't use.
Buy the kit, or not?
Most beginner cameras are sold with a small zoom lens. It is a good way to start, and kits are often barely more than the body alone. Each camera's page shows the body price and the cheapest kit separately, so you can see the difference.
Or buy used
A two-year-old beginner camera from a shop with a warranty is often the best deal there is. See our used price guide, and buying used cameras for what to check.
